Successful environmental management at the Xstrata Wonderkop plant requires the development and implementation of a series of programs which addresses the different impacts of plant activities on the environment. Xstrata Wonderkop has implemented a number of environmental management programmes which includes:

  • Air Management
  • Water Management
  • Soil Management
  • Waste Management
  • Energy and Resource Management
  • Biodiversity Management

Communities

Xstrata Wonderkop is obliged to comply with the requirements set out in the Mining Charter. The companies community responsibility is controlled through the compliance with the quality system embraced in Xstrata HSEC plc Standard 12. Xstrata Wonderkop undertakes to cooperate in the formulation of integrated development plans (IDP) for communities where the smelting operation takes place and for major labour-sending areas, with special emphasis on the development of infrastructure.

Xstrata Wonderkop has the opportunity of playing a major leadership role in co-operating with strategic partners in the area and assisting with socio-economic development. There are investment opportunities in the Bojanala District and although these may not be core business to Xstrata Wonderkop, it would assist with diversifying the local economy and enhancing the plant’s status as a Good Corporate Citizen.Priorities for Xstrata Wonderkop includes:
