SD Report 2009

Xstrata Alloys remains fully committed to protecting the health and safety of all employees and independent contractors, and the protection of the environment and communities around its operations. Management and employees are committed to forming a team that will grow and manage a diversified portfolio of metals and mining businesses with the single aim of delivering industry-leading returns for shareholders.

This can only be achieved through genuine partnerships with employees, customers, independent contractors, shareholders, local communities and other stakeholders, based on integrity, co-operation, transparency and mutual value-creation.

Xstrata Alloys' values and beliefs are:

  • work-related incidents, illnesses and injuries are preventable;
  • foreseeable hazards and environmental impacts must be identified, the associated risk assessed and, where reasonably practical, eliminated or otherwise controlled;
  • there is a safe and correct way of doing every task, however urgent or important;
  • we are responsible for our own actions and the occupational health and safety of our fellow workers; and
  • health, safety and environmental performance can be continually improved.

Sustainable development policy

Xstrata Alloys is committed to the highest standards of health, safety and environmental performance with the ultimate objective of creating and sustaining injury-free, healthy work environments for verybody in the workplace.

Xstrata Alloys recognises the relationship that operations have with local communities and is committed to respect local interests, cultures and customs and work with local authorities, community representatives and all interested and affected parties to create a better living environment for all neighbouring communities.

These commitments will be achieved by ensuring that we:

  • meet and, where practicable and reasonable, exceed the requirements of applicable laws, regulations and standards;
  • commit to and comply with Xstrata's Business Principles and sustainable development standards;
  • manage occupational health and safety through a continual process of identifying, assessing and managing risks;
  • identify direct and underlying causes of incidents and take appropriate steps to prevent reoccurrence;
  • define and set relevant performance targets and measure our performance against our industry peers; and
  • communicate our standards, requirements and achievements to employees, contractors, visitors and the wider community.
